Mushroom heads and how to avoid them?
What is mushrooming?
As the word itself explains, the wick forms a mushroom-shaped carbon layer at the tip of the wicks. This keeps building for a while and eventually will cause the wick to produce larger flames.
When a candle burns on mushroomed wicks, it produces more heat than a normal candle would produce under usual burning conditions. This will cause the wax to burn faster than the intended amount. The container will get really HOT! Do NOT try to touch a candle when the candle burns on a Mushroomed wick.
In detail::
Candle mushrooming or "candle mushroom heads," refers to the formation of carbon build-up or excess wax around the wick of a burning candle, resulting in a mushroom-like shape protruding from the wick's tip. This phenomenon not only affects the appearance of the candle but can also impact its performance and safety.
Here's how to avoid candle mushrooming:
1. **Trim the Wick:**
Keeping the wick trimmed to about 1/4 inch before each use helps prevent excessive carbon build-up and mushrooming. A longer wick can produce larger flames and higher temperatures, leading to increased soot and wax consumption.
2. **Burn-in Intervals:**
Allow the candle to burn for a sufficient amount of time during each use to create a full wax pool that reaches the edges of the container. This prevents tunnelling and encourages an even burn, reducing the likelihood of mushrooming.
3. **Choose Quality Candles:**
Opt for high-quality candles made from clean-burning materials such as soy wax or beeswax. Lower-quality candles or those made from paraffin wax may contain additives or impurities that contribute to excess soot and mushrooming.
4. **Avoid Drafts:**
Burning candles in drafty areas can disrupt the flame's stability and cause uneven burning, leading to increased mushrooming. Place candles away from open windows, fans, or air vents to minimize drafts.
5. **Use Proper Candle Holders:**
Ensure that the candle is placed in a stable holder or container that is appropriate for its size. A properly sized holder helps maintain a steady flame and prevents excessive heat buildup, reducing the likelihood of mushrooming.
6. **Monitor Burning Conditions:**
Pay attention to how the candle burns during each use. If you notice excessive mushrooming or soot buildup, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and allow it to cool before relighting. Adjusting burning conditions as needed can help prevent further issues.
By following these tips and practicing proper candle care, you can minimize the occurrence of candle mushrooming and enjoy a cleaner, more efficient burn with your favorite candles.
